Complimentary place

A free place given by a hotel or airline against a number of paying passengers.

Hotels and airlines give a free place against a set number of paying passengers — one per forty, two per eighty. Agencies usually give that place to staff: a group leader, a religious officer or a female attendant. Its effect on costing is more complex than it first appears: the place may be free, but meals, transfers and sometimes visa fees still arise for that person, and no revenue comes back. The stepped increase distorts the calculation too — when the fortieth passenger triggers a second free place, profit per person can move backwards.

How Complimentary place works in the system

Complimentary places are a separate line in costing, and you set how many passengers earn one. The break-even point is found by repeating the same costing at different headcounts, which is why the step shows up correctly. A single formula misses it.
