MRZ
The two machine-readable lines at the bottom of a passport.
Machine Readable Zone: the two lines of capital letters and "<" characters printed under the passport's identity page. Name, nationality, passport number, date of birth and expiry are encoded there, and the check digits at the end of each line catch misreads.

How MRZ works in the system
When MRZ readers are set to behave as keyboards, no extra software or driver is needed: put the cursor in the field, scan the passport, and the passenger's details fill themselves in. The most common manual-entry error — a mistyped passport number — disappears.
